THE son of Scunthorpe MP Nic Dakin may be used to seeing his father in the political spotlight – but now indie guitarist Tom Dakin is getting ready to go centre stage himself.

The Scunthorpe-born guitarist is heading to Texas with his band The Crookes in a bid to crack the market on the other side of the Atlantic.

The Crookes will be among the British artists at the world-famous South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in the Texan capital of Austin from March 12 to March 17 – where the line-up also includes the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

But first, Tom and his bandmates – singer/bassist George Waites, guitarist Daniel Hopewell and drummer Russell Bates – are on an eight-date tour of the UK supporting Mercury Prize nominee and former Pulp member Richard Hawley.

The tour with Richard started in Buxton on Sunday and ends at Hull City Hall on Tuesday, February 26.

Tom, 26, who joined the Sheffield-based Crookes last year, said: "We're lucky to be on tour with Richard and there are some beautiful venues on the schedule.

"We're at Hull City Hall soon, which is closest to home.

"The Crookes are working with producer Matt Peel who did the album for my former band Silent Film Project.

"Musically, we're moving away from the style of the last album, so I'm interested to see what kind of reception the new songs will get when we start them live."

The switch to The Crookes came after seven years with Rock Open champions Silent Film Project.

The Crookes list Noel Gallagher and Radio 1's Steve Lamacq among their admirers.

MP Nic Dakin said he was proud of his son's achievements.

He said: "I am really proud of what Tom has done and is achieving and I expect this to be a great series of tours.

"The more people that see them, the better. It is exciting stuff."
