VIDEO: Speedway bosses keen to secure Sky Sports coverage of Scunthorpe Scorpions
"Come and film us" is the open invitation being issued by Scunthorpe speedway promoter Rob Godfrey to the Sky Sports TV cameras.
The Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions are the reigning Premier League champions, and Godfrey feels it is the right time for Sky to return to the Eddie Wright Raceway for a second time, following their initial visit for a cracking Scunthorpe v Sheffield match in 2009.
Sky Sports show Elite League racing on a regular basis, as well as the occasional Premier League meeting during the season.
Godfrey says: “If you look at it, there are several reasons why Sky should come to Scunthorpe during the forthcoming season. We are the current Premier League champions. Not only that, but we’re defending the title with largely the same team.

“We also have the best racetrack in the Premier League – that’s official because we won the award for it last season. I think it was the third time in five years of running in the Premier League that we had won the award.”
The promoter is also willing to be flexible on dates.
“We’re lucky in that we own our stadium,” he explains. “I can accommodate the Sky TV cameras on any weekday from Monday to Friday.”
He is very proud of the previous televised meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway on May 5th, 2009, the derby match against the Sheffield Tigers which the Scorpions eventually won by 57-38.
“We had a large crowd, and the racing was sensational," he recalls. "If I ever need to cheer myself up, I go and watch the three heats of that meeting that are on the Internet. There’s overtaking all over the place – there’s a battle between Carl Wilkinson, Viktor Bergstrom and Ricky Ashworth in Heat 5, in which there’s seemingly a pass on every bend! It’s a brilliant advert for both Scunthorpe Speedway and the sport in general.
“Both Nigel Pearson and Chris Louis, who compared our track favourably to Bydgoszcz in Poland, were very complimentary during their commentary. Nigel said he wanted to come back every week; he’s a busy man, so he hasn’t had the chance, but we’d love to see him and the rest of the Sky team back at the Eddie Wright Raceway in 2013.
“I really do feel it’s time we got the TV cameras back again, and showed them something special once more. I would be delighted if they came."
Here’s a taster of the previous Sky meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway:
SCORPIONS HOLD ADMISSION PRICES FOR 2013
The Scorpions have held their admission prices for the 2013 season – charging the same as in 2012 for a single Premier League meeting.
It will cost £14 for an adult to attend the Eddie Wright Raceway for a Premier League fixture – one of the lowest admission prices in the league.
Godfrey said: “We realise that money is tight for a lot of people at the moment. So rather than go for an increase in line with inflation, we have cut costs where we can, so that we can offer the same admission prices as last year.
“I feel that a night out at Scunthorpe Speedway represents tremendous value. We won the award for the best racetrack in the Premier League last year; there’s a nine-out-of-ten chance that the crowd will see a good meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway.
“We’ve again invested in the track over the winter. We’ve added a bit more banking, and I feel it will make the racing even better still.”
2013 Premier League admission prices:
Adult: £14.
Student/OAP: £12
Child (10 - 16): £5
Child (0 - 9) Free (accompanied by paying adult)
Family Ticket £33 (2 adults, 2 Children 10-16)
