Vietnamese students given a taste of A-level education
Vietnamese students have been given a taste of A-level lessons in the UK, after John Leggott tutors travelled 9,000 miles to visit them.
The lessons, arranged with the support of the British Council in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, were designed to show the high quality and style of teaching in the UK to prospective international students and their parents.
The 40-minute introductory lesson covered topics such as entrepreneurs, profit, tips for successful businesses and also a quiz based on the popular television show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
Business studies and finance are the most popular subject choices for students from Vietnam who want to study abroad.
John Leggott College business studies teacher, Richard Farmer, was one of the teachers to visit Vietnam.
He said: "I was very impressed by the ability of the students who came to the lessons. They were asking lots of questions and showed great promise to be successful A-level business students in the future.
"Lots of the students we spoke to expressed a real interest in coming to the college, and we came back with lots of contact details. When we start a new school year in September 2012, I can definitely see the number of Vietnamese students increasing.
"We have given them an idea of what John Leggott College is like, and the response was very encouraging."
There are currently seven Vietnamese students at the college, who moved from their native country to study in Scunthorpe.
Nguyen Hoang Tung, 18, moved from Vietnam to study at John Leggott College nearly two years ago.
He said: "I have a cousin who studied at John Leggott, who said that this college was a great place to study. I love to come here, and it has been an awesome experience.
"I live with a host family in Broughton, which is so peaceful and relaxing compared to the busy streets and traffic in Hanoi."
Truong Vo Bich Phuong, 16, moved from Vietnam to start her studies at John Leggott in September this year.
She said: "I saw a video of people studying at the college, and knew that I wanted to do it. It has been the best choice I have ever made, and we are seeing more Vietnamese students being encouraged to study here. There is a good balance of quiet surroundings here, but also lots to do in your spare time."

“A nice free trip to Vietnam.
This all sounds rather jolly for the participants.
These hard working far easterns are far too sharp to pay for their offspring to study in this failing institution.
But don't let that spoil the "trip of a lifetime".”
