NORTH Lincolnshire Homes has issued a warning to more than 1,000 tenants who have so far refused help.

The social landlord sent letters offering help to all under-occupiers who will be affected by the Government's new bedroom tax.

Around 500 have replied so far but 1,000 tenants have still not responded.

Lettings project officer Sam Gilbert said: "We are encouraged that 500 tenants have chosen to get in touch and seek help but are worried that some may be burying their heads in the sand.

"If tenants are struggling to pay their rent now, come April things will become more difficult."

To tackle the difficulties, North Lincolnshire Homes has set up a new financial inclusion team (FIT).

It has also commissioned a video for tenants explaining about the changes.

“filbert , I take it your in social housing , NLH have a site where you can exchange your home for another, most are people in small homes wishing to get larger homes and the other way round , You have to place bids to get where you want . Not a good system as most want to chose area in town ,lots not wanting say westcliff area . Snobbish or what . If you had wanted a choice you should have bought a house then you could have sold and bought smaller one where you wanted and had some cash left over. Many people could have bought but took holidays abroad had posh cars never had to spend money on repairs or upgrading property . Now they think they have the right to be supported by people who have worked and sacrificed to buy their homes , The social housing owners should be responsible to pay full rates on property . they would soon down size housing freeing of larger property's more suited to large family's . Why should you have a choice to where they put you if you do not like you can go to private landlord . Buying your own has to have some advantage you had the choice . Easy life”

“Can someone please tell me where these people are suposed to down size to? I am in a bungalow trying to change to one in an area nearer to my family, at this rate there is no way I will get to move.”

“The best way would be for owners of such housing company ,Would be to make them libel for paying the rates on the houses they own ,Then they would quickly down size tenants to more suitable accommodation .”

“Truestory, casiofx85gt, I must agree with your comments there are many people living in big four bedroom houses that now have houses that are too big for them now family has grown up and left home , NLH should down size these peoples houses and make way for more needy large family's . If you want a house for life then you should have bought one . In the beginning social housing was set up to help people save until they could afford to buy their own ,first step on the housing ladder .But you have to work for it , forsake holidays and posh cars , pay for your own upgrades and repairs ,But people in social housing have it easy every thing is done for them ,It should be means tested if earning a wage which supported buying house then the option should be given to leave or get increase in rent . houses should be down sized to needs of occupier .Thus saving rate payers the extra cost of propping up rates because of rate reductions for single tenants claiming reductions in large houses . Welcome to the real world .If you want to live in house for life the only option is to work and buy .”

“Personally I do agree with this scheme. Why should one person be rattling round in a three bedroom house and a family with say two kids are stuck in a one bedroom flat. I have empty rooms but that is MY choice as I bought MY house.”

“People need to calm down a bit I reckon. It will most likely get scrapped just in time for elections like most other unpopular schemes seem to.”
