THE heartbroken widow of Barry Shaw, who was killed working at Scunthorpe’s Corus steelworks last Saturday, has paid tribute to her “rough diamond”.

Lorry driver Barry Shaw, 53, died after being crushed to death near the rod mill on August 28.

His devastated wife, Jane, said: “Barry was my world. He loved me so much and would do absolutely anything and everything for me.

“He was such a kind, generous man, who was also a very private person. Putting it simply, he was just such a unique person.

“He was always one step ahead – people thought of him as outspoken, kind and funny, but to me, he was my rough diamond.”

The pair fell in love after a holiday romance 27 years ago and had only moved to the area in 2008.

They were anticipating a happy life together with their three dogs and two cats after stints living and working overseas.

Jane said: “We met when we were both working at a hotel in Eastbourne. I was a waitress and he was a night porter. We were friends at first, but romance soon followed.

“Barry was always a hard worker and held down a number of jobs.

“He worked as a chauffeur for celebrities in London and also did work for Arabs in the capital.

“He used to say, ‘We’re all people at the end of the day’.”

Barry, who spoke with a “charming cockney twang”, grew up in Brighton before moving up to London for work, where his passion for driving finally brought him to the region.

Former school friend Kym Harvey describes herself as “Baz’s little sister”. She said: “There will always be a cup of tea and a slice of burnt toast waiting for him. He was loved by so many people.”

Close friend Brennie White, 49, of Ashford, Kent, said: “To me, Baz was the Scarlet Pimpernel – a one-in-a-million who will never be forgotten.”

As reported, an independent investigation was launched following Mr Shaw’s death. It is believed he became trapped between a lorry tractor unit and a trailer on the Rod Mill lorry park. The sub-contractor was employed by White Liners haulage.

His funeral service will take place at Grimsby Crematorium on Wednesday at 12.20pm.

The family requests that mourners, who are expected to travel across the country to say their final goodbyes, wear a token of bright clothing.
