Woman twice over drink-drive limit when she died in crash on the A18

A woman was twice over the drink-drive limit when she died in a crash, an inquest heard.

Sharon Ann Gaynor, 40, lost control of her car on Saturday, January 28 this year while driving to Crowle on the A18.

An inquest at the Civic Centre, in Scunthorpe, heard that Miss Gaynor was thrown more than 20 feet from her vehicle after it turned over and landed in a drainage ditch at around 7.20am.

Although she was wearing her seatbelt, the damage on impact to the rear of the vehicle caused the driver's seat to collapse, resulting in Miss Gaynor being thrown from the back window after slipping under the belt.

The inquest heard that Miss Gaynor was taken to Scunthorpe General Hospital, but died five days later from chest injuries.

PC Ian Clark told the inquest that the incident was most likely caused by "Miss Gaynor's state of intoxication, coupled with fatigue and possible distraction by her mobile phone".

He told the inquest that estimates of her alcohol level based on a urine test taken around three hours after the crash indicated she would have had 160 to 200 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of blood, with the legal limit being 80 micrograms.

There were no other vehicles involved in the crash.

PC Clark also said at the inquest that "the level of alcohol may have had a detrimental effect on her ability to control a vehicle," and that "less than two and half hours sleep may have been a factor in the circumstances".

Coroner Paul Kelly recorded a verdict of accidental death.
