Martyn Woolford: Time was right to move on, but I owe lot to Iron

OFTEN, by his own admission, inconsistent, there was always one occasion when Scunthorpe United could rely on Martyn Woolford – when it mattered most.

No Iron fan will forget that sweetly-struck 85th minute goal at Wembley, the one which sealed the club a quick return to the second tier, nor his memorable double that downed eventual Championship champions Newcastle United on one of Glanford Park's greatest nights.

So when it comes to extending their longest unbeaten run of the season, Iron boss Ian Baraclough is all too familiar with the man who has the potential to upset their upturn in fortunes at Ashton Gate tomorrow.

Signed by the Robins in a whirlwind move on transfer deadline day, it is less than a month since Woolford ended a 'great' two and a half year association with Scunthorpe.

Still awaiting his first Bristol City goal, no Iron fan would be surprised to see the 25-year-old break his duck at his old club's expense tomorrow.

But if he does, there will be no over-the-top celebrations, no 'rubbing anybody's face in it'.

The former York City winger has too much respect and affection for United to let his emotions get the better of him.

"Wembley is the highlight of my career so far and it will take some beating to better that day," Woolford told the Telegraph ahead of United's visit to Ashton Gate.

"But there's been plenty of good memories for me at Scunthorpe over the years.

"They are times I will look back on and remember how much I enjoyed them, but the time came for me to then move on.

"I'll always look at Scunthorpe's results, I know they've got seven points out of the last available nine so they looked to have turned it around since beating Forest.

"I hope more than anything I'll be playing Scunthorpe United again in the Championship next year.

"I'd love for both teams to stay up, so I wish everybody there all the best. I hope they do that, just not at our expense.

"I've not scored one yet for City, so given what's happened in the past, tomorrow could well be the day. But I won't be rubbing anybody's face in it if I do, that's for sure."

“A good player when he felt like it. Dribbled too much and got tackled too easily.
No I'm not taking away the fact of crucial goals but I think we have a better player in Duffy - who will only get better.”

“"Martyn is going nowhere unless we have a replacement for him"

Money talks eh? - still waiting / playing players out of position.”

“I wish Wooly all the best and hope the move turns out alright for him. Cant help but think that apart from the wage rise that it is a side ways move. They are millions in debt so it will be hard for them to make a promotion push for the next couple of seasons without investment. Us getting the World Cup was their only hope as their ground move seems to have stumbled.”

“My favourite player of the past few seasons - when he was on song he was an absolute joy to watch. Plus, he looks like he's from some 70s communist country, which is always good in my book. Hopefully he'll get a good reception tomorrow, and those idiots who barrack Sharp and Hayes will stay off his back and put their efforts in to supporting OUR players.”
