BUILDING firm Bowmer And Kirkland has erected the first steels on North Lincolnshire Council's The Pods sports centre.

The steel uprights will provide the basic structure for an innovate, eco-friendly design and follow months of groundwork on foundations.

Councillor Christine O'Sullivan, cabinet member for sport, leisure and culture, said: "The Pods site is an ever-changing vista with something new happening almost everyday.

"The building's steel framework started going up this week and will continue for the next three to four weeks.

"Concrete is being pumped in to form the shells of the two pools and by the end of the month we should see the first of the three geodesic domes take shape.

"We're all very excited to see the work progress on this wonderful new facility for North Lincolnshire."

With work progressing so quickly, public interest in the work is high and, as reported, the local authority has erected boards featuring blueprints of the finished design all around the site.

Contractors arrived on the plot, situated in the grounds of Brumby Hall, next to Central Park, and started work in November last year.

“Anon, I suggest that a substantial number of local residents and groups are more than aware of the history and catastrophic track record of both political groups on this council, particularly when it comes to unsuccessfully developing and running such unviable venues.

The calibre and credibility of the council and the negative, destabilising political in fighting and point scoring has hardly improved or created any confidence in the council's judgment and performance.

There are real and understandable concerns and scepticism, in many quarters of the community, that history is likely to repeat itself here and the already highly taxed and over stretched ACTUAL CT payers of North Lincs (and subsidisers of Scunthorpe) will again be burdened with these developments for many years to come.”

“Yet no matter how you look at it - the Pods is named after what kids call the parts of the male anatomy - who's a laughing stock?? Maybe the council who are so antiquated that they don't realise this and thought it sounds a 'cool' name

“Well this juvenile bickering certainly makes a change from the usual whining about how pointless the pods are. I for one think its a good idea. It will bring a modern new facility to the town that people will get a lot of use out of. The problem with people in this town is that they're basically miserable. They love complaining about the state of the town and then when the council try to do something to improve it they love to complain about a few old trees and how much money we're wasting. Why not try being a little positive? It's happening whether people like it or not so try and see the good in it.”
