Yellow lines plan for main town road
DOUBLE yellow lines could be introduced on one of Scunthorpe's busiest roads to prevent motorists blocking cycle lanes.
North Lincolnshire Council are considering putting the lines on Messingham Road (A159) from the junction of Burringham Road to the Yaddlethorpe crossroads.
Bottesford ward councillor Steve Swift is spearheading the drive to protect cyclists who could be in danger from the parked cars blocking the cycle lanes.
He said parts of Bottesford, Ashby and Brumby were affected and ward members from the areas have received comments from cyclists claiming it is less safe.
"Attempts to resolve the situation amicably by the distribution of polite notices asking people not to block the lanes has unfortunately been unsuccessful," he said.
A six-week consultation is due to end the week of January 16.

“Yes to yellow lines on Messingham Rd.
We visit our parents daily on Messingham Rd and park in their driveway. The danger is then trying to get back out onto the busy Messingham Rd with parked vehicles totally blocking our view in both directions. The vehicles (in general) belong to neighbours who have drives but they can¿t be bothered to use them. It is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident.
In addition, when cars are parked both sides of the road, it impedes traffic flow due cars travelling in opposite directions having to squeeze by each other.
So, for the benefit of the cyclists, and the residents who have difficulty getting safely into and out of their driveways, please put the yellow lines down as soon as possible.”

“Have we gone paint mad.
Is it not time that a cyclelane is recognised as a no parking place.
There should be no need for yellow lines as well”

“Councillor Steve Swift has clearly not done a survey on the road or he would have noticed that there are very few bikers, does he not realise that even when the cycle lanes are clear (Ashby road for example) the cyclists don't use them???? I have started a petition - if you wish to add your name please e-mail me on lindsay1975@ntlworld.com.”

“It's about time cyclists started paying their way, even if it was only compulsory accident insurance! It's always going to be the car drivers fault when we hit that unlit cyclist at 5 in the morning that comes off the path, as they negotiate the red traffic light and get away without penalty! Only yesterday a cyclist rode through Britannia traffic lights on red with a Police car directly behind and guess what??? Yup the Cops did sweet FA as usual and just turned left when the lights changed! If cyclists want cycle paths and respect, abide by the law, be courteous and pay your way!”

“The cycle lanes are not as stated willy nilly but quite carefully thought out to create as much congestion as possible with no thought to the cyclist, hence the inconsistency of the styles used to the point some change from road side to footpath or just disappear altogether.
This as stated before is to create the congestion as mandated by H M gov. so that when we all kick up a fuss the can try bring in congestion charges and again well done to the Mancunians for voting against it, Listen Scunthorpe road "planners" (I use that term loosely) we are a small town surrounded by villages not a great sprawling metropolis as you seem to think.
Oh cyclists get some lights on see rule 60 of the highway code.”

I have already spoke with people from the council and received the response its not our problem. Thanks for that gents real helpful.”

“Like Bill I also have seen the cars parked all day on Corporation Road and have wondered why they dont get a ticket. Must be a new rule in the highway code”
