Christmas may be fast becoming a fading memory but, for many, all those mince pies and turkey dinners of last December could still be tipping the scales in the wrong direction. Unfortunately, though the year is now a month old, those well-intentioned resolutions made on January 1st to work off the festive glut may now be starting to slip away.

One of the reasons so few of us manage to keep up our fitness plans is because we expect to fail in our attempts to spend time exercising, be it because of a busy working life or simply a lack of willpower. Another problem may be that we're not picking activities suited to our lifestyles and interests, making even the thought of exercise unbearable, never mind actually doing it.

Thankfully, there are a variety of fitness clubs and activities in the North Lincolnshire area so finding something which works for you shouldn’t be too daunting.

If you’re lacking the strength of will to push yourself into getting fit, Military Fitness Training at Quibell Park may be just what you’re looking for. Launched in Scunthorpe earlier this month, those who attend will be put through their paces in a series of rigorous military-style exercises including team games and obstacle courses. Don’t worry if you’re not quite up to British Army fitness levels though - there are three separate training groups so everybody is welcome, from beginners who haven’t exercised for a long time, to hardened fitness fanatics wanting to go through the same arduous training as British Paratroopers.

Classes run on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 8pm and on Saturdays between 9am and 10am. The first session is free.

For those who would prefer to get fit indoors, there are a host of well-equipped gyms in North Lincolnshire. For example, the Resolution Health Club in Scunthorpe offers a wide range of equipment, classes and training programmes catered to suit your needs. The centre is also home to a health spa featuring a Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna to help you relax and revitalise after your work-out.

Right now, the club is offering £10 off your first month’s membership when you print off the voucher on the directory page and present it at the reception before February 3rd.

Other gyms in the area offering an array of different facilities and classes can be found in the directory too.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with simply putting on some boots and heading out for a bracing stroll. If you find the idea of walking unguided in the Lincolnshire countryside intimidating, fear not as the Walking the Way to Health scheme can help. There are several guided walks in North Lincolnshire held every month which aim to not only improve your fitness, but also encourage an interest in walking as a healthy pastime. None of the routes taken are longer than three miles and take between 60 and 90 minutes to complete. You’ll be accompanied by at least two trained volunteers the whole way too so there aren’t any worries about getting lost!

For more details, and to see when the next walks take place, visit the North Lincolnshire Council Walks calendar website.
