Plans have been announced for the 31st annual Rock Open, which is promoted by the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

The six heats will be staged at The Breeze Inn, Scunthorpe (the former Howden's Lodge) each Friday, starting on October 5.

For the first time since the Scunthorpe Rock Open was initiated in 1982, there will be no semi-finals, with the winners of the six heats going straight through to the final.

Negotiations are on-going with the management at the town's Baths Hall to host the final late in November for the second successive year.

Acts in each of the heats will again be allocated 20 minutes and our judges will again be looking for original material.

Among the first bands to sign up for this year's contest are Lincoln trio Dark Mantra, who finished runners-up in the 2008 final.

Lead guitarist Alex Sharpe told What's On: "The Scunthorpe Rock Open is widely recognised as the longest-running battle of the bands in Britain and it's always a pleasure to be involved.

"It will be great meeting up with old pals in Scunthorpe again."

Breeze Inn operator Nick Breeze said he was last involved in the competition in 2010 when it was hosted at The Beckwood, Bottesford, where he was the manager at the time.

Nick, himself a local entertainer, said: "All the signs are we are going to have knockout contest at The Breeze this year."

The names of the sponsors for this year's Rock Open will be announced exclusively on these pages.

Last year, the trophy was lifted by Hull rock foursome Little Switzerland – at the first time of asking.

Lead singer Simon Binks and his fellow Swiss guard have yet to announce whether they will defend their title at The Breeze Inn.

Musicians who have gone on to better things after taking part in our battle of the bands include Stephen Fretwell, Jay Sikora, Little Man Tate and Silent Film Project.
