Councils try to boost tolls case

Wednesday, October 22, 2008, 07:00

THE four Humber councils are to try and boost their business case against the Humber Bridge tolls.

The Unitary Leaders Group met yesterday to discuss the outcome of the Humber Bridge Tolls Impact Assessment.

The meeting, chaired by North Lincolnshire Council leader Coun Mark Kirk, agreed to commission extra research into the revenue impacts of scrapping or cutting the bridge tolls.

The group was keen to be able to prove to the Treasury the Government would not lose revenue long-term if the tolls were scrapped because of the economic boost that would follow.

Coun Kirk said: "We need a little more work to demonstrate that the case is there.

"We need to strengthen that up. It was a very positive meeting.

"The four unitary leaders are totally signed up to this."

North Lincolnshire's MPs were also briefed on the council's plans at a meeting in Westminster yesterday.
