TWO top cops proved they are a force to be reckoned with after arresting a knife-wielding suspect in the centre of Scunthorpe.

North Lincolnshire's policing commander, Chief Superintendent Pete Simmonds and Humberside Police's Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Donald were at a meeting at the South Humber Racial Equality Council (SHREC) office in Frodingham Road when they were told about an incident outside.

The pair darted outside and tackled a man wielding a knife and hurling racial abuse. The pair detained him until backup arrived to take the suspect to the police station.

Mr Simmonds said he had 'no hesitation' in tackling the suspect and, despite working behind a desk, was still a 'police officer at heart'.

He said: "Arresting this individual put into sharp focus for me the potential danger that all police officers face on a day-to-day basis, 24 hours a day 365 days a year as they undertake their roles.

"I am immensely proud of their professionalism and dedication.

"We will never tolerate abuse and I was pleased that, with the support of colleagues who quickly attended the scene to give assistance, we were able to detain this individual.

"I had no hesitation in tackling him and am pleased and grateful that he was detained without any member of the public being injured."

A 24-year-old was charged in connection with the incident and was remanded in custody.
