FREE agent Eddie Nolan is continuing to train with Scunthorpe United.

But the chances of him earning even a short-term deal with the Iron are slim, it would seem.

Eddie Nolan has spent the past fortnight at Scunthorpe United as he bids to build up his fitness and find a new club.

Boss Brian Laws had been keen to explore the possibility of making the versatile Irishman part of his squad, but discussions with the club’s board yesterday have vetoed those plans.

“We’re monitoring the situation with Eddie,” said Laws on Tuesday lunchtime.

“He’s still training with us at the moment, but we can’t offer him anything at this present time.

“We’ll have to wait and see if he’s got any other options to do something.

“If we do anything, it will probably be on as a ‘pay-as-you-play’ basis, but obviously he’s got to live and pay the bills and to do that he needs a job.

“He’ll be trying to get something somewhere else if we can’t offer him anything on a permanent deal.”

Nolan, 24, has been without a club since being released by Scunthorpe at the end of last season, but linked up with the club again a fortnight ago to try to keep his fitness up.

He spent a large chunk of the first part of the campaign training with Doncaster Rovers.

Laws said Scunthorpe will review the potential to offer the full-back terms at the end of the transfer window.

But unless there are outgoings at Glanford Park, it would appear unlikely.

“Norwich have just got Becchio from Leeds so that ends their interest in Hooper. Spurs want an international class striker, not one who is playing park football and valued at £8m. They only sniffed around because they had a short term concern over Jermaine Defoe.

Of course, I could be completely wrong. Levy is a last minute merchant!!

Lets hope Hoops doesn't move until the summer after Mr W is gone then the money can be utilised in the club. I will be surprised if he moves now as he is for free in the summer. Its good that he isn't making a noise about it because, much as I like him and what he did for SUFC, there is no guarantee of him getting a prem club.”

“Dmented i think you have got it wrong, wharton is sufc through and through as the clappers would have us believe. He is leaving in the summer and he will write the dept off, and allow the club to invest any hooper sell on money in rebuilding for the club.Sorry demented back to reality he will claw all his money back and more and leave our club well and truly in the s**t and in complete freefall.Well done wharton and the freeloaders you will take our club down as your final legacy, and our supporters will just wonder what could have happened if you had shown the slightest bit of ambition and forsight."UP THE IRON"!!!”

“Come on scatman. You know the answer. ANY money coming in will go to clear the debt to Wharton as he's going in the summer.

    Mr W is no philanthropist.”

“I wonder what will happen if Hooper moves tomorrow? we should get a good payout from any potential move? will we be able to offer him something then or dare I say it buy someone else???

Or will it go to clear more debt first and us get relegated? any thoughts????”

“Any money coming in from player sales and sell on clauses will not be spent on the team. Any such money and savings made in the running of the team and the club as a whole will be used to reduce the club debts which currently are at over £2m.

Brian Laws will have to work within the budget allocated so as in the previous article it will be one in and one out and if none out none in. This situation will not go away as the club will post further significant losses at the end of the current financial year and so adding to the debt burden.

Even a pay for play contract with Nolan would exceed the budget and as we have fit players able to play in those positions Nolan plays in also makes any chance of a deal negligible.”

“Possibly Blue_jean, but I doubt it. We've already admitted that getting permanent signings in look unlikely and that loans are the best we can feasibly put together, in which case the deadline isn't tomorrow.

This news sounds to me like "thanks for your time Eddie, as things stand we don't expect you to play on Saturday so we can't justify making you a deal. Sit tight and see how our injury situation progresses, if Ribeiro doesn't come back as hoped or someone else drops out, we'll see what we can do".

Really feel for the lad, not a day's pay in eight months (he's certainly not a bad player) and we can't even give him a pay-as-you-play deal.”

We could always offer Eddie a deal if it fails..”

“This shows how difficult the clubs finances are. Brain Laws is no fool and is very used to working on tight budgets. Obviously this is oustide the current budget or he would have just gone and done it.He wouldn't have wasted the Boards time if he thought it was going to be turned down. BL has stated before his dissapointment that he has been left with no contingency. lets hope that Mr Knill has at least learnt something from his mistakes (and our pain!)”
