“Speed Camera's - This is such a controversial issue, many people have different views on them, I believe that they increase hazards and that they have very little impact on road safety.
Until recently, drivers in North Lincs were faced with the occasional camera van or motor bike, which could not read speed correctly once it got dark, however recently Scunthorpe has seen an increase in speed vans and bikes, with and increased number of locations for these waste of money cameras being sited.
The speed cameras are operated by fully qualified police traffic officers who could be earning as much as £28,000 per year, these cameras serve only one purpose, to make money for the government or the local police force.
A few days ago things changed in North Lincs with my first sighting of a speed camera van on Messingham Road at night, as I was driving towards it, it flashed three times catching drivers going in the direction of Messingham.
This is BAD NEWS for drivers of North Lincolnshire, it now means our roads are money making opportunities for the police and the Conservative government all day and night, 365 days a year, they will make a lot more money from drivers in North Lincolnshire now.
My proposal would be to abolish the speed vans and speed bikes, and only use fixed cameras in sites where they has been a history of fatal accidents, otherwise speed cameras should not be used. They cause drivers to break suddenly, becoming an accident risk, they make money from drivers, they cost the tax payers money to staff, service and purchase, this money could be better spent on signs that tell you your speed, which have proved to have a better effect on driving than speed cameras.
If mobile speed cameras are to be used in this time of austerity then surely it should be a PCSO on £14,000 per year operating the camera not a police officer earning twice as much.
Drivers of North Lincs beware of these money making menaces.”
