“In light of a recent discussion within the 'Exercise your right to vote on Thursday' thread, a few things came to mind. It would seem that the monitoring body that watches over the behaviour of councillors , known as The Standards Board For England, has now been demolished, disbanded, closed down, however you want to put it. This body had the power to impose realistic sanctions on any councillor who was proven to have stepped out of line. However, this job has now been passded down to the local Standards Committees who have at best minimal powers to impose sanctions such as 'anger management training' upon the elected members they actually found guilty. The theory is that the electorate now have the power to decide what happens to errant councillors via their voting slip. Hmmmm, best scenario in this instance is that after possibly four years of waiting to 'not vote' for certain members, justice will be served. However, for this theory to actually work, any actions and behaviours of our elected members considered dubious at the least MUST be available for public consumption, otherwise how are we the electorate able to impose any form of said justice? With this in mind, the recent case of Cllr Grant / Fillingham http://tinyurl.com/b786oxl much of this case was witheld from the public thanks to Cllr Grants legal representative, (I wonder how much 'public money' Mrs Fillingham was allowed access to for legal advice) the solicitor representing Cllr Grant even tried to have the complainant barred from her own complaint hearing?? The only viewable data relating to this case consists of time, place , who was involved etc etc, however, we do get to see that the complaints made were all but one proven to acceptable standards! Heres the irony, or some may call it 'injustice' perhaps, Cllr Grant walked away untarnished, from whatever he had done to this woman, and we the public don't have a bl**dy clue as to what actually happened. She had to leave her job because of this man, this appears to be a fact, he did what ever he was accused of, this is a fact, but we are not allowed to know any more! There is a prime example of democracy and justice and transparency at its best. If I were this woman, I would be selling , telling or writing my story just to get the truth out there before the next election at least. WE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW!!! I would advise we keep a watchfull eye over the council standards pages , to see what passes as 'exempt information' and guiltless actions, for as the saying goes, THE TRUTH WILL COME OUT, just not too late I hope !”

“@Femme1Good on you for your excellent piece. Encouraging to at last see others prepared to stick their necks out and exercise their democratic and civic right and duties to challenge and expose the calibre and credibility of Scunthorpe's politicos and so called elected community representatives!I am somewhat surprised that your comment has thus far escaped the attentions of the local blog police. And for once any removal of your comment hasn't been spurred on by the usual complaints of defamation and/or threats of legal action from within Scunthorpe's Labour mafioso circles!?”

“I would hope there is nothing untoward or untrue in the discussion for the 'blog police' to attack me on? My comment discusses facts re the abolishment of the Standards Committee for England and issues relating to the case brought to our attention on the 'Exercise Your Right....' forum, and the info on the council standards pages. I just feel worried that there are no viable channels for residents and council staff to go through should a similar situation arise, I got the distinct impression from the Grant Fillingham case , that an elected member has carte blanche to behave in whatever manner he / she chooses and to hell with employment rights! With no Standards for England body, what is left as a viable body to impose any realistic sanction upon elected members and MPs when those who do not behave in accordance to their esteemed position are complained about? I can appreciate that the majority of elected members et al behave impeccably, but what of the others?I may have this completely wrong, but it seems incredulous that we have to abide by rules these people put in place , yet they appear not to be governed by the same ideals! Where is the logic? What was that Police song De do do do, De da da da.........Thank you for your support though :-)”

“No problem. Agree all the way and credit where credit is due.Whether it be with "intent" or otherwise!? Trade union's and political bruisers and dinosaurs of Grant's ilk just can't help themselves. As Grant demonstrated on Tuesday at NLC Full Council, by publicly singling out and by his perceived intimidation of a member of public in the gallery from the floor of the council chamber! In my humble opinion the man's an egomaniacal evasive bruiser! In short, a complete ****head!! Unfortunately for Scunthorpe's image, reputation and past and future prospects; it says it all as regards the Fred Karnos circus of dimwit clowns, liars, cheats and bullyboy/girl cowards that is Scunthorpe Labour and its 'corrupting' domination of this town! ;-)”
