“Couldn't agree more - in my experience children will respond to your time and attention far more than shiny toys. I think the dominoes and draughts sets are used far more than the expensive gadgets. Having said that, I think the pressure is immense to give the kids what their friends have and I don't blame anyone for caving.”

“Yes the pressure is immense on families to keep up with the Jones but that very action is the reason that so many families cant make ends meet. In this climate no single family is feeling the pressure they all are. If paretns talked about the situation and explained what they were doing perhaps everyone would start the New Year in a better financial situation rather than facing huge credit card bills and bank overdraft fees.
Every one with children must have had the Christmas when the boxes and paper were played with more than the gifts inside. We need to teach children how to use their imaginations and respect and accept what they have. Time is the most precious gift any parent can give a child.”

“Looking back, I have to admit that the presents I got as a child which got the most use were often the simplest ones. I remember about 15 years ago getting an official Premier League football - probably about £12 - which me and my friends played with for years.”
