Dog sanctuary hit by credit crunch

Tuesday, August 26, 2008, 07:00

THE growing number of hard-up families ditching their pets has led to North Lincolnshire's biggest dog rescue centre being full to bursting point.

The credit crunch crisis is so critical the Jerry Green sanctuary at Broughton has had to introduce a waiting list for new inmates for the first time in more than 40 years.

"It's a case of when we find a new home for one dog, there are 10 more waiting to come in," said Gail Windsor, the manager of the rescue centre.

Kennels at all seven rescue centres run by the Jerry Green canine rehoming agency are now chock-a-block, and chief executive Desmond Bagin revealed there was sign of a turn in what he described as 'an increasing tide of woe'.

Mr Bagin said: "People tell us they simply cannot afford the bills."

He said the problem was so bad there were now 300 unwanted dogs at the seven centres including 70 at Broughton.

The centre at Broughton was the first of the seven sanctuaries to be opened in 1961 with the help of a trust set up by businessman Jerry Green in honour of his deceased spaniel Rusty.
