Letter of the week: Plastic glasses
Thursday, November 20, 2008, 12:28
The authority is proposing to employ a new 'energy tsar', with a salary of £30,000 a year, to help cuts costs.
Reader Ken Harrison, of Little Lane, Wrawby, wrote to the Scunthorpe Telegraph's Viewpoint column to express his views.
The letter said:
I WANNA be that £30k pa energy tsar for North Lincolnshire Council.
Here are a few of my cost-savingly green ideas:
Buy all employees two pairs of long-johns (women can have pink) and then turn the temperature down in council buildings
Convert all school transport to dual-fuel – LPG and pedal power. Schoolkids pedalling will also make them fit
Allow council cleaners to clean offices during normal office hours. Those office staff who object can be given a portable DIY vacuum cleaner and a plastic sack
Install an extractor fan in the council’s debating chamber and heat all NLC buildings with the hot air.
All entrance doors’ pivots to be connected to a generator, thus ensuring anyone heaving the door open will need to produce 1kw of electricity before gaining access. Those using the exit doors will need to produce 2kw of power
Create an enormous cesspit for toilet waste. The resultant methane gas can be used for heating purposes
Use existing tax laws to purchase bikes for employees at a tax-free rate. Employees living in close proximity, or who are very friendly, can be offered tandems
Allow staff to work from home, thus using their own energy, and then close down all council buildings, making massive savings
Reintroduce the traditional tea and sticky-bun lady – the hot urn will create occasional auxiliary heat source for those employees complaining of cold.
I trust the council will take my application seriously and I await their response.
