They say that in the mad rush it is easy to forget simple things like locking your car and not leaving valuable items on car seats.

Keep Christmas presents out of sight, police urge motorists

Many people wrongly think thieves only target houses at Christmas - but they are on the look out for easy pickings from vehicles.

Those presents you have just bought are like a gold mine to a thief who will find a way to get into your car, police say.

One of the most important things to consider is where you park your vehicle - choose a well-lit space that is away from pillars.

Or choose car parks with security measures in place and significant lighting.

Don’t leave presents, valuables, sat navs and handbags on display inside the vehicle.

If you can see them, so can a thief.

Check your vehicle before you leave and ensure it is locked with all windows closed.

It is all too easy when you are in a rush, or have other things on your mind, to forget the simple things. But these things can make a difference.

"They don't take a lot of time to do but could save you making that call to the police and your insurance company," the police say.
