Top-flight youngster may be Iron manager's plan B
SCUNTHORPE United look set to turn to plan B in their search for a prolific goalscorer.
Following a summer of frustration, United may yet fail to bring in a striker on a permanent basis prior to the end of the transfer window.
Having witnessed one target – Adam Le Fondre – play against the Iron during a 2-0 win over Rotherham in pre-season on Wednesday night, United boss Alan Knill could only glance enviously in his direction with little to suggest Scunthorpe are prepared to match the Millers' valuation of the 24-year-old, believed to be in excess of £500,000.
That has forced Knill's hand, with an unproven, but talented, Premier League youngster another option.
"We have been out to watch Liverpool versus Birmingham reserves (on Wednesday)," said the United manager of a game which ended in a 3-0 win for the Reds, with young English front man Nathan Eccleston netting a first half brace.
"Don't get me wrong we would like a name, but unfortunately the price for those names are a little too expensive.
"We are just looking for something that will make us a little better."
