IT IS with great sadness today that we report the death of Liam Thompson.

Over the past six months, Liam's name – and face – have become a regular part of the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

It was last August that we were first approached by Liam and his then fiancée Alice Faulkner.

Liam had been diagnosed with osteosarcoma – an aggressive form of bone cancer – and the couple were desperate to bring forward their plans to marry before his health deteriorated further.

Their front page story sparked a response from our readers and the business community that they could only have dreamed about.

Offers poured in to the Telegraph and soon it was clear that their wedding dreams were going to become reality.

In October, we were there to share their big day and convey the messages of support that were sent for the couple.

But the following month the couple received the news they were dreading as doctors told them there was nothing more they could do.

Liam died last Friday – at the age of 23.

He had been married to Alice for just three months, time she admitted that had "flown by".

Although three months is precious little in terms of a married life together, for Alice and Liam it meant so much.

Your generosity helped give them that time together as husband and wife. It gave them the wedding day they deserved and the precious memories which Alice can now cherish.

Those that helped make the wedding happen described it today as an "honour and a privilege".

Fitting words for everyone involved in this brave young couple's story.
