I TAKE exception to an attack on my integrity by the regional organiser of the Federation of Small Businesses, Michael Self, in these columns.

It is said I'm politically motivated in my stance on what is best for this area in respect of Local Enterprise Partnerships. This could not be further from the truth.

I've been listening carefully to what the majority of businesses have to say in North Lincolnshire and across both banks of the Humber, including many of the very largest companies who have a presence on both sides of the bridge – companies employing thousands of people and investing million of pounds.

And what have they been saying, Mr Self? I'll tell you. Their collective view, almost without exception, is that only a single LEP taking in both banks makes any sense economically, if we are to compete for limited funds with the likes of the much bigger players such as Sheffield, Leeds and Manchester.

Listening to business is what LEPs are all about. It's also good to know seven out of the Humber's 10 MPs also believe a Humber-wide LEP is the only sensible option. Conservatives in Hull West and Hessle also take this view. No, I am not politically motivated. My only motivation is to do what is best for this area and for jobs and all businesses including members of the FSB. On that I am happy to be declared guilty.

Councillor Mark Kirk

Leader, North Lincs Council.
