NEARLY one in five over 50s in Yorkshire and the Humber have found the carpet missing when moving into a new home.

Roughly 16 per cent of over 50s found that the previous owner had ripped up the carpet and taken it with them.

Missing carpets can be a problem for those moving into a property

Nationally, nearly one in five over 50s say previous owners walked off with the light bulbs – maybe because modern energy saving light bulbs are so expensive - while one in ten found trees, plants and shrubs had been removed from the garden and even the washing line had gone. Perhaps surprisingly, one in eight nationally said that the previous owner had also ripped up the carpets.

However, older homeowners leave helpful items for the next owners such as personal notes on how things work (42 per cent). Their kindness and thoughtfulness extends even further as a fifth have left welcome or good luck cards (21 per cent), and an extremely generous one in eight (13 per cent) left gifts such as a bottle of wine or a plant.

The most thoughtful people are in the South East as they are the most likely to leave things to help the next owners, whereas people living in the South West take the most when moving home.

Roger Ramsden, chief executive, Saga Services commented: "In cash strapped times it's nice to see many householders are making thoughtful gestures by leaving cards or takeaway menus for the new owners. I'm sure they appreciate not having to cook on their first night in a new home even if they do have to eat off a cardboard box."

“All things to be included in sale should be on a list issued by solicitor, listed down to the smallest fixture but taking action against the seller is often costly so some don't stick to it, if the seller fails to stick the the contract they should have to replace all items and pay all costs and legal fees, it should be clearly stated in the contract.”

“Wish that the previous owners for our house took just the carpets from our house, instead they took the kitchen, the mo***lock driveway and even the door frames from the upstairs doors”

“I don't see the point in removing the carpets as unless the room you intend to use it again is smaller it will never fit anyway.”

“When I bought my present home, I wish they had taken the carpets because they were 'manky'. Some friends came round and I just told them to flick their fag ash on the floor, it's supposed to clean carpets in some weird way. Needless to say they were ripped up at the first opportunity and replaced.”

“It was always the case that carpets were NOT considered part of the fixtures and fittings. It was usual practice to take carpets as part of the furniture when moving. I am, therefore surprised the percentage is as low as 16% unless this refers to only cases where it had been agreed that carpets would be left. If so then this sloppy reporting.”
