United boss Baraclough still hoping to strike a deal for a new forward

SCUNTHORPE United manager Ian Baraclough could be set to switch his focus to the loan market to try to add some more goal power to his faltering attack.

And he has not ruled out doing something in the next 24 hours in time for tomorrow night's home game with Burnley which is live on Sky television.

The Iron will already have three new recruits making their home debuts against the Clarets – centre back Paul Reid, midfield man Abdisalam Ibrahim, who made their first appearances at Leeds last week, and winger Mark Duffy who joined them from Morecambe yesterday.

They could be joined by a fourth if Baraclough can get the right answer at last to his search for another striker.

The United boss was desperately disappointed to miss out this week on Kilmarnock hot-shot Conor Sammon who turned down at the last minute what would have been a £450,000 club record move to Glanford Park.

He knows too that reported details of the fee, leaked in Scotland, will not help his search elsewhere.

"We have been concentrating on the permanent side of things," said Baraclough.

"But we have also been keeping an eye on the loan market.

"That might be the route that we now have to go down.

"If the right phone call comes back for someone we have inquired about then I would certainly look to bring someone in, in time for tomorrow.

"We know we need to bring someone in up front.

"We have not lacked in creating chances generally, but we have not been putting our fair share of them away.

"If we had, then we might have had some more points on the board and not had some of the problems we have now."

One new face who could be set to arrive at Glanford Park next week is Chelsea full-back Ben Gordon.

He returned to Stamford Bridge at the beginning of January with an injury he picked up at the end of his previous loan spell at Kilmarnock.

Scunthorpe have an agreement with the Premier League outfit to take him for the rest of the season.

Gordon is now back doing some training at Chelsea and could travel north next week.

One loanee already here is delighting Baraclough.

Nineteen-year-old Ibrahim, from Manchester City, found it a tough debut in the 4-0 defeat at Elland Road last Saturday, but will be looking to shine tomorrow night after the benefit of now having had a week's training with his new team-mates.

"He has settled in nicely," said Baraclough.

"He is a talent, you can see why City rate him so highly.

"But he is only 19, this is his first time away from City and we have to make sure we look after him.

"When he goes onto the pitch he wants to express himself.

"He is very comfortable on the ball, he is athletic – he is exactly what I was looking for."

    “Steve,
For once the ST are right not to touch that story, seeing as it's got a pic of Richard Brodie.”

“I would say that Bara has done everything right. He's got a CB which was much needed, a defensive midfielder to replace Wright, a winger as cover for Thomo and a new LB so that Nolan can play RB.

He has tried to get a striker. Bristol Rovers want £1m for a player who can't help them out of the Lge 1 relegation zone.

And the SET don't have this story yet:

What is the story there ? Adkins paid £80k for this guy.”

“At last Barra is looking at strikers. Please try again for Will Hoskins and ring Saint Andrews and ask Kevin Phillips would he like to come as a player/coach they can only say no and at Kevin Phillips age he will have to look at coaching sooner rather then later because he cant go on at premier league for ever and haveing his name in the building would draw others here. Good luck tomorrow working so i'll be watching on the TV UP THE IRON and bring us a long deserved home win.”

“Why disapointed in Sammon not signing - it was never down to anything other than personal terms and if we cant double Kilmarnocks wages then why bother in the first instance.

I dont have a lot of faith that these new signings will improve us anymore than Macdonald/N'Guesson/Sears did...these were/are decent players but you can have ten great players but if there is no one up front to finish, it's a waste of time.

What we need is a 'rabbit from the hat' loanee of a PL centre forward.

    Up the Iron!”
