A dinner is set to be held to mark the 30th anniversary of the death of author Ted Lewis, who grew up in Barton.

Mr Lewis is best known for the novel Jack's Return Home, which was later transferred to the big screen in the classic film Get Carter.

He died in 1982, at the age of 42, but members of the Barton Arts Group have ensured the town continues to honour his work.

Monty Martin, secretary of Barton Arts, said: "Ted's Appreciation Group is holding a Ted Lewis dinner on October 5 at Barton's George Inn, where the artist regularly drank in Lila's Bar, often after entertaining with impromptu jazz and other piano renditions in the town.

    “Like Mr Lewis I regularly entertain myself and others with impromptu jazz performances (Get Farter?). Although the rendition of a piano is not something I agree with, Guantanamo is no place for a Steinway.”
