THE first baby to be born at Scunthorpe General Hospital on Christmas Day had her name picked by ward midwives.

Sarah Wigham's baby girl drew her first breath at 12.45 am. But, as proud dad Roger explained, they had not yet decided on a name for their new baby as she was not due until January 5.

Husband Roger, the boss of R & SW Joinery Ltd, said: "I just said to the midwives, if you put a name on a piece of paper and put it into a hat or bowl, we will pick it out – and that was what we did. Sarah picked out Melissa."

The couple were delighted with their choice and decided they would give her the middle name of May.
