£1bn boost if Humber Bridge tolls axed

Tuesday, October 07, 2008, 07:00

A £1-BILLION windfall for the local economy would come from scrapping the Humber Bridge tolls, a leaked report has revealed.

The Scunthorpe Telegraph yesterday saw a copy of the study commissioned by the four unitary authorities bordering the bridge.

The consultants said the benefit to the area would be about £39-million in 2009, and a staggering £1.1-billion over the next 25 years.

An option of reducing the toll to £1 per car was also examined.

The study was commissioned at a time when the Humber Bridge Board is proposing to raise the tolls again.

The Scunthorpe Telegraph has been running its A Toll Too Far campaign since mid-September to stop the Humber Bridge tolls rising again.

The campaign is calling for a public inquiry into the proposals.
