Asbestos 'robbed ex-steelman of retirement'
Saturday, August 30, 2008, 07:00
Norman Lee died of industrial disease following a career of working with and around asbestos dust at Scunthorpe's steel works, coroner Paul Kelly ruled.
Mr Lee was found dead by a neighbour at his home in Dovedale Close, Winterton, in March.
Speaking after the ruling on Thursday, Heather Leedham (corr) said her father had not been an old man before he died.
Mrs Leedham described how her father had loved his car, driving everywhere, and loved his life.
Mr Lee, who was 79, recorded a statement before he died describing his working conditions.
His statement was read in to the coroners court as evidence.
Mr Lee said described how his work had led to constant exposure to asbestos dust, which was used as lagging in many areas of the steel works.
Mr Lee worked for a number of companies during his career including British Steel and Appleby.
Mr Lee said he was devastated when he was given his diagnosis in December 2007.
Mr Kelly said he had no difficulty agreeing with the diagnosis given during Mr Lee's lifetime and the findings of a post mortem that he was suffering from a malignant mesothelioma, caused by exposure to asbestos.
Mr Kelly said: "My conclusion is that he died as a result of industrial disease."
