Ashby club launches battle to beat closure

Steward Maureen Locking said: "Obviously the smoking ban affected us quite a bit, but these past three months with the credit crunch are really putting the nail in the coffin.
"I would say we are losing £500 a week to what we were taking before.
"In order to keep it going, we really need new members to sign up."
Mrs Locking said it would be a shame to lose the club which has a special atmosphere.
Lawrie McWilliams, the managing director of the Harrogate-based firm of Orbis Management, said: "The committee has agreed to have 'a last throw of the dice' to try to revive the business."
Mr McWilliams said trade at the Ashby Social had dropped by more than 30 per cent in the past 12 months due to a combination of factors including the smoking ban.
At the same time, overheads had risen by an average of 40 per cent and to add to the cash flow problems, the brewery suppliers had informed the committee of an extraordinary price increase.
