Assault man said wife liked being spanked

Friday, September 18, 2009, 14:00

A SCUNTHORPE man who admitted bruising his wife's buttocks with a slipper, claimed she had developed an interest in spanking, North Lincolnshire Magistrates' Court heard.

Rebecca Dolby, prosecuting, said the assault took place on August 9, at the Eastfield Road home of Mark and Rebecca Gibbons.

"Mark Gibbons found a message on her computer, relating to her having conversations with other men," she said.

"He keeps a sandal at the side of the bed," she said.

Gibbons pushed his wife onto the bed and used the cork-soled sandal to assault her.

Mrs Gibbons protested about the assault, declaring: "Ow - it really hurts," she continued.

When questioned about the offence, Gibbons claimed his wife was interested in spanking.

"He said his wife had started going into chat rooms on the Internet and she had seemingly got interested in spanking. He said she said 'I need punishing'," Miss Dolby stated.

Gibbons told officers he was not happy about the situation and had discouraged her from using the Internet.

And he claimed he had slippered her on the two previous nights without any complaint.

He admitted assaulting her on the night in question.

In a victim impact statement, Mrs Gibbons said the defendant had made her life a misery and he had made her feel like a prisoner in her home.

But District Judge Daniel Curtis noted she had attended at a previous hearing and said she wanted him to be allowed to return to their address.

Gibbons, 41, of Brocklesby Road, admitted a charge of common assault, said nothing in mitigation and was given a 12-month community order, with the requirements he receives nine months supervision, carries out 150 hours unpaid work and pay £85 costs.
