Bus lane sparks outrage
Friday, November 21, 2008, 07:00
North Lincolnshire Council announced yesterday that a £30,000 bus lane is to be introduced along Oswald Road, Scunthorpe.
Businesses told the Scunthorpe Telegraph they feared parking restrictions which will be introduced to accommodate the bus lane will damage trade.
Patrons will be banned from parking along Oswald Road between junctions with Mary Street and Station Road, from 3.30pm until 6.30pm Monday to Saturday.
Landlord Alan Edgar of the Honest Lawyer public house said: "There will be nowhere for my customers to park, it's a diabolical idea, we did object but it didn't do any good– we're dreading the lane being made."
David Harris, manager of Motor World, said: "We're only one of a number of businesses that this affects, I don't think any of them will be particularly pleased about this."
Pete Scott, head of Safer Roads at North Lincolnshire Council, said: "Although some parking will be lost for a short period each day, this will be limited. I understand the local concerns about the scheme, but I feel the proposal will achieve the desired public transport improvements whilst at the same time keeping any adverse impact on businesses to a minimum."
Access to the bus station via Manley Street and Fenton Street is restricted to cars, but is not a bus lane as it is not a through road.
