John Cavill from Simply Gardening for Schools lets Eastoft Church of England School pupil Bronwyn Steer get the feel and smell of Broccoli.

CHILDREN from throughout North Lincolnshire learned how to grow their own broccoli at the sixth Annual Food Festival, held at Holme's Pink Pig Farm.

Pupils from nine different primary schools attended the event.

Simply Gardening For Schools managing director John Cavill showed the youngsters how to plant purple sprouting broccoli at yesterday's event.

They were handed a peat pot and two broccoli seeds, which could then be taken back to their schools.

Mr Cavill said: "When the plant is about 50mm high, you take the whole thing and plant it in the garden.

"It will grow in the winter and in April, they will be able to harvest their own broccoli."

And he said the event was a good way of getting children interested in growing their own food.

"It has been brilliant," he said.

"We have had 10 children around every table and they are really interested.

"It is a chance to get their hands dirty."

Other attractions at the event included tractor rides, as well as talks by the North Lincolnshire Beekeepers' Association.

Eastoft Primary School year one pupil James Ferguson, five, said: "I am having a nice day.

"We have been learning about beehives and we have planted some broccoli."
