The decision was made by the council at Tuesday's meeting, which was held at Old School Hall Community Centre.
A committee, tasked with looking into the issue, recommended the council considered contracting someone to check the CCTV fortnightly.
But to help save cash councillors agreed they would take on the task of checking the footage and equipment, in their own time.
The town's deputy mayor, Linda Cawsey, said the footage needs to be looked at and the equipment checked on a weekly basis.
She added: "I think it is a very positive move."
