Councillors stage walkout

Friday, November 21, 2008, 14:00

CONSERVATIVE councillors walked out en masse from a special North Lincolnshire Council meeting called to consider an investigation into one of their members.

They left after chief executive Simon Driver confirmed Conservative Coun Rob Waltham had been eligible to stand as a councillor at the last election.

Every member of the Conservative group immediately declared a personal interest in the matter under discussion and then left the Pittwood House meeting.

The extraordinary meeting of the council had been called to discuss a motion written by Labour member Coun Steve Swift.

It asked for an investigation into allegations levelled against Coun Waltham about outstanding county court judgements.

But Mr Driver said: "As a result of further information received and enquiries and searches made it was determined that steps have been taken to pay the outstanding judgement.

"Most importantly from the council's perspective, Coun Waltham is not and was not at the relevant time declared bankrupt with a restrictions order.

"This is the only ground on which a member can be disqualified from standing or remaining as a member as a result of an unsatisfied county court judgement."

Due to the potentially defamatory nature of some comments left on this article, the facility has been suspended.

Well done Tony Blair! You knew just when to resign as Prime Minister, leaving Gordon Brown in the mess you created. However, Brown is not without criticism. The next election I will vote for the Monster Raving Loony Party.
