Ex-smokers helping hospice campaign

Friday, March 06, 2009, 07:00

SMOKERS are stubbing out and giving their cigarette cash to a local hospice which cares for cancer patients in time for No Smoking Day next week.

Three quitters have already signed up to Lindsey Lodge Hospice's Drop the Ash and Donate the Cash campaign and are hoping to inspire others to do the same.

Richard Forrington (24), of Chaucer Avenue, Scunthorpe, gave up smoking and joined the Lindsey Lodge campaign 11 days ago.

Richard is a yard operative at Rainham Steel, on Mannaberg Way, Scunthorpe, and said he wanted to give up smoking for his two-year-old son.

Nick Wright (27), of Woodcross Avenue, Scunthorpe, also works at Rainham Steel.

He had been smoking for 10 years before deciding to quit for his health, to save money and to stop 'stinking like an ashtray'.

And Gail Norton (41), of Beesby Road, Riddings, works at Lindsey Lodge Hospice as a catering assistant and has been smoking for 25 years.

No Smoking Day is on Wednesday, and smokers who want to quit can sign up to the Lindsey Lodge campaign by calling (01724) 843731.
