General Hospital to upgrade X-ray suite

Thursday, November 12, 2009, 06:30

HEALTH bosses are to invest £500,000 on state-of-the-art upgrades to X-ray equipment at Scunthorpe General Hospital.

The new kit will mean doctors can undertake fluoroscopy work, which captures images in real time.

It is used to see how patients swallow and digest and can highlight problems such as blockages.

The new X-ray machine will also boost image quality and speed for faster and better diagnosis.

Radiology manager Paul Gould said: "The new machines are at the cutting edge of imaging technology and will provide us with an opportunity to extend the diagnostic services we currently provide.

"It also means our image quality, functionality and speed will be improved, as well as the patient experience."

Managers are looking at one of two machines to invest the cash in – a Philips MultiDiagnost Elevawith flat detector, or a Wolverson Arcoma TI Precision General Room with auto-position and film following.

While work on upgrading the X-ray suite is carried out, some patients will be seen at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby.

Fluoroscopy work such as images from barium meals, barium enemas and hysterosalpingograms will have to be done at Grimsby until the work is finished in January next year.
