Gypsies evicted from Conesby site

Saturday, September 06, 2008, 07:00

GYPSY families who left 'a trail of destruction' were forced off Conesby Quarry hours after being handed an eviction notice.

The small community of travellers, who had set up camp off Normanby Road, were said to have been 'the worst' the council had come across.

A 48-hour eviction notice was granted on Wednesday by Scunthorpe County Court.

Conesby Quarry site will stay closed to travellers for the foreseeable future.

Cabinet member for housing Coun Mick Grant said: "These are some of the worst families that I've come across.

"They have left without paying legal fees or rent and have left a trail of destruction.

"I have nothing against gypsies using our land and the vast majority are sensible and law-abiding."

North Lincolnshire Council and Humberside Police received many complaints about the travellers living on the site, including allegations of criminal damage and trespass.

The council moved in to secure the quarry at about 5am yesterday.

Well done Tony Blair! You knew just when to resign as Prime Minister, leaving Gordon Brown in the mess you created. However, Brown is not without criticism. The next election I will vote for the Monster Raving Loony Party.
