Hundreds back tolls battle

HUNDREDS of names have been added to a petition against Humber Bridge tolls.

Launched just 24 hours ago, the Scunthorpe Telegraph campaign has already received massive support from readers.

Our sister papers in Hull and Grimsby are also adding their support to the campaign.

The petition follows a report into the impact of the Humber Bridge tolls which said the region would benefit by more than £1-billion by 2025 if tolls were abolished.

John Parton, who spent more than £10,000 on tolls travelling with and visiting his wife before she died on September 11 this year, said he supported anything that could see the tolls abolished.

Mr Parton was shocked at the findings yesterday that 20,000 journeys are made to Hull Hospitals every year by North Lincolnshire residents.

He said: "20,000 is a staggering figure. That just goes to prove how many people need to go to a specialist hospital.

"I am totally for specialised hospitals and I am prepared to travel, but when you have got to travel over the bridge it adds insult to injury.

"It is not a question of reducing the tolls, it is a question of abolishing the tolls."
