Scunthorpe firefighters to learn Polish

The idea for the language classes were sparked by an incident where a Polish man could not understand firefighters as his house burned.
Scunthorpe watch manager Andy Fowler said: "I was at a house fire a year or so ago and we were trying to communicate with the Polish chap who lived there to see if anybody was trapped inside.
"There was a person, who we managed to rescue unharmed, but I did not want to be in that position again.
After the fire, Mr Fowler began learning Polish himself and had the idea of getting other firefighters to do the same.
In September, ten pioneering firefighters at the Scunthorpe station will begin Polish lessons.
The lessons will be one-and-a-half hours long, including a half-hour overlap with classes for Polish people learning English for real-life conversation experience.
A spokeswoman for Scunthorpe's Polish Club on Frodingham Road welcomed the language classes.
