A BONFIRE bonanza took place across the region yesterday as hundreds of dazzling fireworks lit up the sky across North Lincolnshire.

Thousands of people flocked to Heslam Park to watch the Rugby Club's annual Guy Fawkes spectacular. Earlier rain showers did not dampen the spirits of event goers as people of all ages donned hats scarves and gloves to enjoy the fantastic firework display and the blazing bonfire.

As well as the delightful display hungry visitors enjoyed an array of tasty traditional treats such as hot dogs and toffee apples.

Darren Johnson, who is starring as nurse Annie Fanny in this years Christmas pantomime Dick Whittington amazed the crowds a lit this years bonfire.

Last year more than 6,000 people attended the event which raises hundreds of pounds for Scunthorpe's rugby teams. Organisers were confident this years crowd was just as strong.

Colts team coach and event organiser Terry Fennell said: "We were delighted to see so many people come and support the event once again this year. We were very lucky with the weather, it was perfect for the fireworks and everyone enjoyed themselves without getting too cold."

Lia Derzypilskyj, 10, from Bottesford said the event was magical.

"I thought the fireworks were brilliant. I really liked all of the pretty colours glittering in the sky. My favourite ones were the fireworks which made a big bang. They made me jump but they were very pretty."
