Town centre pubs to use plastic glasses

Thursday, November 13, 2008, 07:00

DRINKS in Scunthorpe town centre bars and clubs will soon be served in plastic glasses.

The move comes after a spate of weekend 'glassings' which have resulted in numerous people being injured when bottles and glasses have been used as weapons.

In one incident the victim, who has not been identified, required seven stitches in a facial wound.

Licensees on the 30-strong Scunthorpe Pub Watch at their November meeting gave approval to the switchover – subject to costing details being worked out.

Pub Watch's newly-elected chairman Patience Roberts said: "We are all in agreement because glassing is such a serious offence, and we want to do everything possible to stamp out this type of unspeakable behaviour.

"We are also to introduce aggressive banning from our premises for people convicted of such offences."

Traditional glasses are set to be replaced with a polycarbonate variety which looks and feels similar to ordinary glass.

North Lincolnshire Police licensing officer Pc Steve Turner said: "Over the past six weekends in the Scunthorpe town centre there has been an incident every weekend where at least one person has been injured by a bottle or a glass.

"Pub Watch is in full support of Humberside Police and will be working alongside us to help eradicate this problem."
