Winterton pupils lap up F1 In Schools Challenge
Winterton Comprehensive's Accelerate Team topped the time sheets in the Bloodhound SSC category but narrowly missed out on a spot at the national finals in Birmingham as the competition was judged on speed, physics, aerodynamics , design and manufacture of the car.
The school's second team – This Won't Take Long – also put up a good showing in the contest, which challenges the technology and engineering skills of school children.
Accelerate team member Rachel Cooksey, 14, said: "We have been working on it for six months. These past two months have been pretty hard.
"I started off with an engineering thing in year seven to do with a flight project. It then developed in to wind turbines. Then this came up.
"Our teacher organised it and brought us here. We got involved and made up the team."
Connor Baker, 15, was a member of This Won't Take Long.
He said: "We have been working on it for a few months. We have been using a virtual wind tunnel.
"It's been great, we've learned a lot.
"It would have been amazing to make the national final."
Design technology teacher Les Hardwick-Grey said he was really proud of both his teams.
He said: "It's really good. It's made them come together as a team they weren't necessarily close friends when they started off."
