Fire crews tested in carnage mock-up

Saturday, September 06, 2008, 07:00

A RECONSTRUCTION of a dramatic 10-vehicle road accident has been acted out as an emergency services training exercise.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service mocked up a huge car park to look like a three -lane motorway for the fake accident, which involved a car transporter, six cars and four motorbikes.

Five fire crews took part in the exercise, where firefighters fought to free a number of 'casualties' using all the skills they would in a real-life situation.

Cars were cut apart, the transporter lifted with special equipment to free a dummy of a biker stuck underneath and basic first aid was administered to volunteers.

Martin Peers, station manager at Scunthorpe Fire Station, said the staged smash helped firefighters perform better at real collisions.
