THE importance of skills, innovations and an ability to invest, whether the business is in fabrication, forging, steel making or precision milling, was spelled out.
"I think it is a 10-year journey and I am passionate about wanting to do more of this in the UK," Mr Maier said. "It is not a quick process and I realise that makes a nice story in newspapers, but this is about supporting industry and sustained investment to make this happen.
"The main reason Siemens is investing here is not because of great support from British Government, it is because the market is here.
"You could argue the British Government is creating that market, but we are not here because there are ready-made skills to build. To attract more companies here we have got to do much more in terms of getting the right skill base. A company wants to come here and have 10 colleges around that are producing all the trainees, to be shown the university working on the next generation of technology. I am sensing that we are beginning to understand it as a country, and for the first time while I have been working in British engineering, I'm starting to hear 'industrial strategy'."

Reflecting on his address, Jon Bolton, pictured right, the Scunthorpe-based director of Tata Steel's Long Products division, said: "The scale of the opportunity is the first thing that hits you, the 40GW and the 12-million tonnes of steel. It is a huge amount of steel and a huge opportunity. We look at the size, scale and location, and the fact we are only playing in 10 per cent of that market at the moment. We are grateful for the 25,000 tonne order, and we must now develop a relationship with the customer.
