He said: "I have always loved fish in particular and I know there used to be a pet shop in Ashby.
"I thought there was a good opportunity here and I really wanted to do what I could.
"I worked as a postman for six years and it was a good job, but I wanted to turn my hobby into a money-making business."
Mr Pletkus, who is originally from Lithuania, has lived in North Lincolnshire for the past seven years.
He said he was hoping to have the shop ready for opening soon.
And he said customers could look forward to a wide range of stock for various types of pet, as well as fish.
He said: "I want to be open at the beginning of June but I am doing everything myself and that has consumed some time.
"There will be tropical fish, coldwater fish and all of the accessories.
"There will also be dog and cat food and accessories, rabbit food and all of the usual pet shop things.
"I am hoping to add hamsters and small pets a little bit later, as much as the shop will allow.
"It is something new for me but I am mad about fish and have about seven fish tanks at home."
Mr Pletkus took over the premises this month and has since made alterations to create more space inside the shop.
And he said once open, prices would be competitive.
He said: "Scunthorpe is not a posh town, so it will be lower-end pricing.
"If there is demand, there will be some premium products as well and whatever people ask for, I can order."

“Hope this fella does well . The part of Ashby he is moving to though always seems to look neglected by the council and i think they should do more like the schemes being carried out in other towns .”

“That second to last line says it all.
The old pet shop which used to be in Ashby, McNeils I think it was called, was run to the ground by a bunch of amatures mascarading as businessmen.”
