GLITTERING CEREMONY: Last year's Mail News & Media Business Awards. Below, Mail editor Neil Hodgkinson speaks at the event.

Mail editor Neil Hodgkinson said: "The number of entries and the quality they demonstrate shows just how resilient and strong local businesses are proving in the midst of the longest recession in living memory.

"It is just great to see local firms making a mockery of the national doomsayers and those who love to criticise this area.

"Every entrant should feel very proud whether they win or not."

There is no doubt a fragile economy creates a tough time for business but the motivation of local firms has shone through in the vast amount of nominations that have been sent over the past months.

Now in their 12th year, the awards have become a highlight of the region's business calendar and will showcase the talent in business enterprises throughout Hull and the East Riding, whatever size and business they specialise in.

They will also shine a light on local firms working hard to create jobs and wealth within the local economy.

This year, Mail News & Media has added a number of new awards to ensure the event celebrates successful businesses of all sizes.

For the first time, Business Of The Year has been divided to ensure everyone gets a fair chance to win.

It has been split into three sections – Small Business Of The Year, Medium Business Of The Year and Large Business Of The Year.

The prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award is one of this year's new awards. Sponsored by KC, it will be presented to someone who has made a significant and positive impact on the local business community over a number of years.

The shortlisted companies will be revealed in a special Business Awards supplement on Wednesday, October 10, and a glittering awards ceremony to celebrate this year's winners will be held on Thursday, November 15, at the Willerby Manor Hotel.
