“Parking is only part of the problem. High rents and rate charges make it very hard to run a high street based retail business that makes a profit. I wonder if that's the reason why Ernest Jones has just announced the closure of its Scunthorpe branch?”

“about six years ago i got a parking ticket for going over my time by three minutes. its no coincidence that i have not used the town centre since. two hours free parking wont tempt me back because two hours and three mins later i know what would appear on my windscreen
looking at the bigger picture town centres all over this country are dying and little gimmicks wont change that. people prefer the convienience of lakeside etc.
why not try something more radical like demolishing most of the town centre building a road system that makes it more convienient. then have smaller niche type shops, cafes and trendy bars with outside areas making it more fun and relaxing and pleasing on the eye. utilise the area at bottom near the church for entrtainment like big screens for sports etc have free parking all the time. the concept of town centres for shopping is dead. time for a real change”

“you are right sausage, Bernard Regan did increase charges for parking , as did the conservative cabinet member John England, To claim only labour has is untrue, All councils have increased parking charges and use the motorist as a cash cow all over the UK

Should any time be made for free parking it should be applied across the whole of the utility and not used for politics , but fairly applied
Tthe cost of this reduced income should come frome the senior offficerson over £50,000 and ruling members who have awarded themsevles huge pay, allowance and pension increases at the expense of the oposition and workers who have a reduction in their emoluments

Just one further point Scunthorpe is not a town it is a Parlimentary constituancy - That the inhabitants are being denied the first tier of local govermet

“I would prefer to drive 45 minutes to 'Meadowhell' to do a decent shop than spend hours wandering the crack head infested ghost town that is Scunthorpe High Street.”

“You know and I know that when a council takes something from somewhere they'll just move the costs to someone else and simply up the shopkeepers rent and rates. Face it - it's dead and no amount of kicking the body is going to make it come back to life.”
