No short cuts for barbers
finance: High-street hairdressers and local barbers across Hull face an additional cost according to a local accountancy specialist.
Darren Tomlinson runs TaxAssist Accountants in Hull. He said: "Hull has a number of popular hair stylists, who until now have been able to manage their costs by renting chairs in local salons, without being subject to VAT."
From October 1, chair rentals have become standard-rated for VAT and the ruling stretches to any clearly defined area in the salon used by stylists and to services related to hairdressing.
Mr Tomlinson said: "Salon stylists should check to see if the new ruling applies to them. As most will not be VAT registered, their chair rental will cost them an extra 20 per cent, because they can't recover the VAT."
