Ethan: Mark's my new friend

Thursday, September 11, 2008, 11:47

Their latest film, What Doesn't Kill You, is about friendship, and leading men Mark Ruffalo and Ethan Hawke revealed how they became firm friends through working together.

"Mark's the first new friend I've made in a long, long time," Ethan said at the film's press conference in Toronto.

"The people you're really close to tend to be people you met early in your life, because you can't make new old friends. Friendship is something that I value so much. I know if you want friends, you have to be a good one."

He added: "People write self-help books about that kind of thing. We all feel so terribly alone, and if you meet people who can accompany you on the road and nudge you in the right directions, and somebody to laugh with, then it's OK.

"One of the things Brian (Goodman, director) used to say - it's somebody who can watch your back, somebody you would call with your good news. Lots of people like to talk about the bad news, somebody who can cry to you, but who's going to be pulling for you when something good happens?"

Mark said: "It's (friendship) very, very important. As you go along, you realise it's something very fine and difficult and rare to have in your life. That old adage that we have - 'you can count your friends on one hand' is completely true, I think. I wouldn't be anywhere without my friends."

Regarding the smoking ban, when you go out and go back home you no longer smell like an ashtray. Passive smoking kills. Period.
